How do you export a ChatGPT chat to PDF?

Quick answer: Print the page for a rough PDF, use ChatGPT’s official data export for a full account archive, or save the open chat in ChatCairn and export a designed PDF with page numbers. Free for up to 50 saved chats (as of Oct 2026).

Last checked 2026-10-24. Official ChatGPT steps cite OpenAI Help. ChatCairn features were checked against version 0.3.1 of the extension (as of Oct 2026).

Method 1 — Browser print (free)

  1. Open the ChatGPT conversation in Chrome or Edge.
  2. Press Ctrl+P (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+P (Mac).
  3. Choose Save as PDF and save.

Limitations to expect: the printout may include the site sidebar and UI chrome; code blocks and wide tables may wrap or cut off; and the browser may add its own header/footer (URL/date). Useful for a quick snapshot; less ideal for a clean archive.

Method 2 — ChatGPT official “Export data”

Per OpenAI Help: Exporting your ChatGPT history and data:

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT.
  2. Profile menu → Settings → Data controls.
  3. Under Export data, select Export, then confirm.

OpenAI sends an email or SMS when the export is ready (can take up to 7 days). The download link expires 24 hours after you receive it. The ZIP includes chat history and other account data — not a polished one-chat PDF. Available for Free, Go, Plus, Pro and eligible Edu; not self-serve on Business, Enterprise or Healthcare workspaces.

Method 3 — ChatCairn

ChatCairn saves the open conversation from ChatGPT (also Claude, Gemini, Grok) into a local library, then exports Markdown or PDF:

  1. Open the chat on chatgpt.com.
  2. Click the ChatCairn icon, then Save this conversation (an explicit click; chats are never auto-saved).
  3. Open the library, pick the chat and click Export PDF. You get a designed page with ChatCairn’s own header/footer and page numbers; long tables and code blocks flow across pages, and notes or tasks you made on that chat are added at the end.
  4. Click Save as PDF and choose “Save as PDF” as the destination in the browser’s print dialog. Nothing prints until you click.

Free: up to 50 saved chats, search, Markdown/PDF. Data stays in your browser. Privacy policy.

Try ChatCairn — free for 50 chatsSave, search and export ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok chats. 100% local.

Comparison

Which should you use? It depends. For one short chat, browser print is free and fine. For a full backup of your whole ChatGPT account, use the official data export: it arrives as a ZIP, by email, within up to 7 days. For clean, readable PDFs of the chats you care about, with page numbers, code and tables intact, and the same tool for Claude, Gemini and Grok, use ChatCairn (free for 50 chats, as of Oct 2026).

Bonus — Markdown

ChatCairn also exports Markdown with YAML front-matter (title, source, URL, saved time, tags) for Obsidian or Notion: use Export Markdown in the popup or the library. See the Obsidian guide.

FAQ

Can I export only part of a chat?

Print captures what’s on screen. Official export is account-wide. ChatCairn exports a saved conversation; use highlight → note/task for a snippet.

Shared links?

OpenAI’s documented export is for your signed-in account data. If your UI differs, follow current OpenAI Help.

Claude / Gemini / Grok?

ChatCairn supports save/search/export on those sites too. Native export menus differ — see the other guides.

Is it private?

Saved chats stay in your browser; no ChatCairn servers for chat content.
