How to Search Old Claude Chats (and ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok)
How do you search old Claude chats?
Last checked 2026-10-24. Built-in ChatGPT and Claude features below cite official help pages. For Gemini and Grok, this guide sticks to documented data-export options plus ChatCairn’s verified local search of chats you save.
The problem
Useful answers live in four separate histories with vague titles. Searching one product never finds what you said in another.
Built-in search (what we verified)
ChatGPT
Per OpenAI Help: Finding your chats, projects, and files: open Search in the sidebar (or Ctrl/Cmd+K on web). Search matches words in titles or messages, including archived chats. Deleted chats are not searchable. Available to signed-in users on all ChatGPT plans (web, iOS, Android).
Claude
Per Claude Help: chat search and memory: on paid plans (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise), you can ask Claude to search past chats (e.g. “Find our conversation about …”). Scope: chats outside projects, or within one project when you search from that project. Incognito chats are excluded. Toggle off in Settings → Memory (“Search and reference chats”). Free-plan past-chat search via this tool is not described as available.
For a full archive you control: Export your Claude data (Settings → Privacy → Export data on web/Desktop; email download link; link expires in 24 hours).
Gemini
Google documents downloading Gemini Apps data via Google Takeout / Gemini Apps data, and exporting individual responses to Docs (Export responses from Gemini Apps). To full-text search Gemini conversations alongside your other AI chats, save the ones you care about in ChatCairn and search that local library.
Grok
xAI describes accessing personal data through its account and privacy flows (see x.ai Consumer FAQs and Privacy Portal). To full-text search Grok conversations next to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, save them in ChatCairn and search locally.
Tips without any extension
- Rename chats with the topic you will search for later.
- Use Projects / folders where the product offers them.
- Star or pin important threads if available.
- Keep a short personal index note (date + topic + URL) for critical decisions.
One library for all four — ChatCairn
What ChatCairn 0.3.1 does:
- You choose which chats to save (not automatic).
- Full-text search across saved ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok chats (titles and every message).
- Opening a search hit highlights matches in the chat and lets you step next/previous.
- Click a note or task to jump to the exact message it came from; Open original takes you back to the chat on the AI site.
- Storage is local (IndexedDB / chrome.storage). Backup/restore via JSON if you switch computers.
Keep results findable
Assign projects on notes/tasks, turn key answers into notes, and export Markdown backups periodically.
FAQ
Does ChatCairn save chats automatically?
No. You save (or export) explicitly. Be deliberate about what you keep.
Can I search chats I saved months ago?
Yes, as long as they remain in your local library (or you restored a JSON backup).
What if I switch computers?
Use ChatCairn’s JSON backup and restore. Uninstalling the extension deletes local data — back up first.
