Summary
BackTrail is a browser extension for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge by LGD Ventures. It stores the address (URL), title and time of the pages you open in each tab, so it can show that tab’s Back history and bring it back after the browser restarts. This is web browsing history, and it is kept only in your browser (chrome.storage.local). LGD Ventures runs no servers that receive it.
What BackTrail stores, and where
- Each tab’s Back history: address, title and time of each page, and which tab it was opened from. Page content is never read.
- Closed tabs with their history, for 7 days (90 days with BackTrail Pro). Then they are deleted automatically; you can delete any of them earlier from the panel.
- Small settings: the light or dark theme, when the browser started (to list the tabs you used since then), and short-lived state to match tabs after a restart.
- All of it stays in your browser’s extension storage. Uninstalling BackTrail deletes everything it stored.
Your browser’s history
- The
historypermission is read-only. Once at install (and again only if you click “Recover earlier history again”), BackTrail reads your browser’s history on your device to rebuild the earlier Back history of tabs that were already open. It never changes or deletes your history. - “Recover earlier history” can also read the browser’s own History and session files that you pick with a file chooser. They are read inside the extension page, in memory, and never leave your computer.
Permissions
- tabs: the address and title of open tabs, to attach each history to the right tab and to switch to, close or reopen a tab when you click it.
- webNavigation: to record each page you open in a tab, including Back/Forward.
- history: read-only, as described above.
- storage and unlimitedStorage: to keep the history in your browser without silently dropping it.
- sidePanel: the interface is the side panel.
- alarms: a one-minute check that keeps tab positions current and deletes closed tabs older than 7 days (90 with Pro), and a twice-a-day check of whether a Pro license is due for its weekly validation.
No host permissions and no remote code.
Network requests
Your history never leaves your browser. The free version makes no network requests, and BackTrail contains no analytics, tracking or ads. Links you click (this website, the store page, your email app) open normally in your browser.
Only if you buy BackTrail Pro: when you activate your license key, about once a week afterwards to check it is still valid, and if you deactivate it, BackTrail sends that key and an activation id to Lemon Squeezy’s license service (api.lemonsqueezy.com). Nothing else is sent: no history, addresses, titles or counts. The extension can technically connect to no other server.
BackTrail Pro purchases
BackTrail Pro is sold by Lemon Squeezy, our merchant of record, on its own checkout page, under its privacy policy. Lemon Squeezy receives the name, email and payment details you give it at checkout and sends you the license key; we see the order (email and license) to provide support, never your browsing data. The license key is stored in your browser’s extension storage; deactivating it on the Pro page or uninstalling removes it there.
Feedback and the uninstall page
“Send feedback” opens your own email app with only the BackTrail version and your browser name and version filled in; nothing is sent unless you send that email. When you remove BackTrail, your browser opens a short optional survey page on this site (lgdventures.github.io/backtrail/uninstall/). The only information in its address is the version number. The page has no analytics or tracking; if you answer, it opens your email app with your answer, and nothing is sent unless you send it.
Sharing and selling
We do not sell, rent, transfer or share your data, and we never receive it. It is not used for advertising, creditworthiness or anything other than BackTrail’s single purpose: showing and restoring your tabs’ Back history.
Chrome Web Store Limited Use
The use of information received from Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Microsoft Edge
On Microsoft Edge, BackTrail works exactly as described on this page and follows the Microsoft Edge Add-ons developer policies.
Your control
Delete closed tabs from the panel at any time, and remove everything by uninstalling the extension. Because we don’t hold your data, there is nothing on our side to request or delete, but you can always contact us.
Changes and contact
We will update this page (and its date) if BackTrail’s data practices change. Questions: lgdventures.hq@gmail.com · LGD Ventures.
